Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better PDF Print E-mail

sisters together move more 035By teaching women how to take better care of their bodies and develop healthier habits, we believe we can help reduce obesity rates and get local women—and, in turn, their families—on the path to healthier, happier lives.  Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better encourages African American women ages 18 to 35 to maintain a healthy weight by becoming more physically active and eating healthier. By working with women, who make most of the household food and nutrition decisions, it was the Urban League’s goal to impact the entire family. Sisters Together is a 12-week program that offers participants workout sessions, nutrition classes, cooking classes, pre and post health screenings, walking partners, promotional T-shirts, fitness bags, water bottles/pedometers and healthy restaurant discounts. Funding for this program was provided by grants from the BlueCross BlueShield Foundation of Tennessee, UNUM, the State of Tennessee, and the Lyndhurst Foundation.

Impact:

  • Sisters Together serves more than 500 women annually and has impacted 1,300 women since the program was launched in 2007
  • On average, participants lose 7 pounds and 2-4 inches from their waist
  • More than 50% of the participants continue with the program and graduate to a healthier lifestyle and weight loss success
  • Some participants have been empowered as certified fitness instructors and have assumed leadership roles
  • Many participants report a decrease in medications and increased knowledge regarding nutritional habits
